Sales manager balancing sales targets and team leadership

You can sell. You can lead. But doing both well at the same time? That’s where most sales managers hit the wall.

Many companies elevate top-performing salespeople into management roles without fully redefining the role. The result? You get leaders who are still half-closers trying to manage a pipeline while also managing people.

And here’s the kicker: both sides suffer.

When you’re chasing deals, you’re not fully present for your reps. When you’re coaching your team, your deals go cold. Split focus might make you feel busy but it’s a sure way to cap your growth.

Leadership demands clarity of role. If your energy is divided between closing business and building a team, you’re likely doing a disservice to both.

The transition from individual contributor to leader is more than a title change it’s an identity shift. You go from winning deals yourself to helping others win. That requires a mindset of multiplication, not just performance.

Too often, player-coaches justify their dual role by saying, ‘I lead by example.’ That’s admirable but leading by example isn’t the same as coaching with intention.

The best leaders aren’t the ones jumping in to close every deal they’re the ones building a team that doesn’t need them to.

If your time is constantly split between your quota and your team’s development, it’s time to make a decision:
Do you want to be the top rep? Or the person who builds a top team?

Because in high-performance sales cultures, the most valuable leaders aren’t the ones with the biggest deals. They’re the ones who build systems, inspire belief, and replicate success through others.

It’s not about stepping back from sales because you’re not good at it. It’s about stepping up to leadership because your team needs more than a part-time coach.
Focus isn’t just a productivity tactic. It’s a leadership multiplier. Choose your lane. Then lead like it matters because it does.
