Sales leader empowering and developing their team

There’s a moment in every sales leader’s journey when they have to make a choice: do I want to be the hero of every deal, or do I want to make heroes of my team?

For many, especially those who rose through the ranks by closing big business, the temptation to keep the spotlight is strong. It feels good to be the closer. To be the one who saves the quarter. To be the name on the deal everyone’s talking about.

But here’s the truth: leadership isn’t about proving how good you are. It’s about making others better.

When you constantly insert yourself into deals, you may feel helpful but you’re actually holding the team back. Every time you swoop in to save a rep, you’re sending a subtle message: ‘You can’t do this without me.’

And over time, that message sticks.

Reps stop taking ownership. They hesitate. They wait for you to intervene. And soon, you become a bottleneck not a builder.

The best leaders aren’t addicted to credit. They’re obsessed with results. And they know that long-term success comes from developing a strong bench not just carrying the team on their back.

So how do you step out of the spotlight without stepping away from impact?
– Coach in the background, not from center stage.
– Celebrate your reps loudly and publicly.
– Redirect praise back to the team whenever possible.

Great sales cultures are built when reps feel empowered not overshadowed.

Your team doesn’t need a hero. They need a leader who believes in them, invests in them, and trusts them to rise.

And when they do? That’s the real win.

Because the legacy of a great leader isn’t the deals they closed it’s the leaders they created.
