When was the last time you blocked time to think – really think – about your team’s strategy, pipeline health, or long-term performance?
If you can’t remember, you’re not alone.
Most sales managers are so entrenched in the daily grind that they never look up. They’re in the weeds answering emails, solving disputes, updating CRM records, and checking boxes.
But here’s the problem: you can’t steer the ship if you’re always stuck in the engine room.
Leadership requires altitude. You need perspective to see what’s ahead. You need space to observe trends, anticipate challenges, and shift direction before it’s too late. That’s impossible if you’re tangled in operational tasks every day.
Being ‘busy’ might feel productive. But if it’s keeping you from high-leverage leadership work, you’re just trading your most valuable resource your focus for short-term fixes.
Let’s be clear: execution matters. But execution without strategy leads to burnout. You’ll keep the ship afloat but you’ll never move forward with purpose.
Your team looks to you for direction. They need you to scan the horizon, identify the next big opportunity, and call the plays that win. If you’re stuck reacting to every hiccup, you can’t be proactive. And without proactive leadership, the team drifts.
Start treating strategy time like revenue. Block it. Protect it. Use it wisely. Because it is the one thing that multiplies every other effort you and your team make.
Ask yourself weekly:
– Where is the team wasting energy?
– What’s the single constraint slowing our momentum?
– Which part of our process needs coaching or clarity?
You don’t need hours of whiteboard planning. You just need focused time to reflect, assess, and lead intentionally.
Because if you’re not thinking about the big picture, no one else is.
Get out of the weeds. Your team is waiting for someone to take the wheel.
